Camp Philosophy

At the Redbird Debate Institute, students will participate in intensive instruction and practice to prepare for a successful 2017-2018 debate season. Students will receive expert lectures on the upcoming topic and major argument styles, as well as instruction on more effective debate preparation and performance. At the RDI, students will receive the same amount of quality instruction as in other camps, but in half the time and at half the cost.

Camp Options

Illinois State hosts a high school summer debate institute each year. The dates for the 2017 summer debate institute are July 23-28.  We offer instruction in Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Student Congress, and Public Forum Debate.

Policy Debate

Students will participate in debates, individual practices, activities, and lectures. This section of the Institute provides students with an excellent opportunity to gain a competitive advantage before the season begins.

Lincoln Douglas Debate

The LD section of RDI is designed to assist debaters of all levels to improve.  The curriculum integrates activities and lectures, which gives debaters the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the material and potential topics that they may debate in the upcoming season. The focus is on mastery of debate skill and theory through intense concentration on specific facets of debate, while maintaining a fun and laid-back atmosphere.

Student Congress

The Student Congress section of the camp is designed to assist debaters of any experience level in all aspects of congress competition. Emphasis will be placed on writing and researching legislation, composing speeches, and mock congressional session speeches. Staff includes individuals who have qualified and coached individuals to the NFL National tournament.

Public Forum Debate

The Public Forum section of RDI is taught by staff experienced with Illinois State High School Public Forum Debate.
