Dr. Krzysztof Ostaszewski, professor of mathematics and the actuarial director for the department of mathematics, has been recently elected to the Social Insurance & Public Finance Section Council of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) for a three-year term. The Social Insurance & Public Finance Section is a section of the SOA, and its purpose is to develop continuing education opportunities for those in actuarial sciences and sponsor research that evaluates social insurance programs.

This is an important opportunity for Dr. Ostaszewski, and he is very excited to be elected to this position. “This is an opportunity for me to be involved in a debate on the state of social insurance (Social Security and Medicare) and public finance (federal, state, and municipal) in the United States and globally,” Dr. Ostaszewski said. “In 2013, we have witnessed the bankruptcy of Detroit and had a lot of debate on the state of public pensions in Illinois, California, and globally. The Society of Actuaries is involved in research projects aimed at securing pensions and assuring their solvency, as well as stability of public finance.”

Dr. Ostaszewski has also explained the work his new position involves. “This work involves meetings, discussions, and exchanges of ideas among Council members, as well as similar exchanges with other decision makers at the Society of Actuaries. The work aims at creating both a general direction of what the research work at the Society of Actuaries should be, as well as proposals on what specific research should be pursued.”

This hopes to be a fulfilling three-year term for Dr. Ostaszewski inhis newly-elected position on the SOA’s Social Insurance & Public Finance Section Council.
